Deeds relating to land and property within the West Riding
of Yorkshire
were registered at the West Riding Registry of Deeds, Wakefield
between 1704 and 1970.
This registration excluded copyhold and short leases.
The main purpose of registration was to provide reliable evidence
of ownership.
Memorials of the registered deeds are indexed
by the personal names of the parties
to the deeds over the above period.
Parties to deeds can include trustees of chapels
and other institutions.
Memorials were also entered at the Registry of
Deeds of wills in which property
in the West Riding was bequeathed.
In addition there are place name indexes for
the periods 1704-1787 and 1885-1923.
Research undertaken at the Registry of Deeds
would include examination of
these Memorials using the name/place indexes.
